We classify voyages which sail from one destination area to another as Ocean Crossings, as for example sailing from the Caribbean to Boston, or sailing transatlantic from Europe to North America. Voyages are usually longer, with more sea time and few, if any, port calls along the way. These voyages offer the opportunity for real hands-on learning underway. Typically those engaging to sail on an ocean passage are expecting to work alongside the professional crew, to be assigned to a watch section, to taking part in all the of vessels evolutions, from setting & trimming sails, taking a turn at the helm, to assisting in the galley, and helping to maintain the ship with chipping & painting or varnishing. Circumnavigations are voyages of many months which circle the globe. Usually they are offered in long segments which may be booked separately.
