The mission of Tall Ships America is to encourage character building through sail training, promote sail training to the North American public, and support education under sail.
Tall Ships America is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization focused on youth education, leadership development and the preservation of the maritime heritage of North America. Founded in 1973 and headquartered in Newport, Rhode Island, Tall Ships America is the hub for tall ships activity, expertise, and information in North America and is commended by Congress as the National Sail Training Organization representing the United States.
We are a membership organization, with individual and organizational members from around the U.S. and the world. Membership is open to all who share a love of seafaring and recognize the trans-formative power of education under sail. If you believe that facing the challenges of the sea leads individuals to make lasting discoveries about leadership and teamwork, and inspires them to greater self-confidence and a sense of personal competency, then please join our diverse community of sailors, educators, and supporters who are dedicated to this mission.
In addition to organizing the TALL SHIPS CHALLENGE® annual series of races and public maritime festivals, Tall Ships America manages scholarship programs to make sail training experiences more affordable for young people, and grant programs to assist crew of member vessels with the costs of professional development courses and licensing requirements. We hold the Annual Conference on Sail Training and Tall Ships, and bi-annually publish SAIL TALL SHIPS!, a Directory of Adventure and Education under Sail®.
